Lake Avenue St. James Both cards: Lake Avenue. Left: The second house has a sign that says Real Estate, House to Let. On the right in the distance is the Nissequogue Hotel. Right: the building shown on right is still there and is known as the Flatiron Building.

Lake Avenue from Rail Road Left: "Lake Ave. from Railroad," - from the Flatiron building. Ice Cream is sold in the store at the left. Right: R. R. Depot, St. James, which was completed in 1873. For another card of the station, click here.

St. Jame Post Office "Post Office, St. James" This building is on Lake Avenue just north of the rail road tracks. As you can see in the picture, two bay windows were added on the right, and an extension at the left.

Gould's Hotel "Gould's Hotel, St. James." The road ahead is 25A. The triangle is still there. To the right is Lake Avenue. The hotel is gone (it burned down) and Lake Avenue was cut straight through the property for better traffic flow. Across from where the hotel stood is the fire house. For a scan of the card with it's original message giving directions, click here.

St. James Fire House "Fire House, St. James, Long Island." This location was chartered in 1922 and expanded in 1953. It is on 25A Across from the location of Gould's Hotel shown above. The sign announces bingo every Friday night.

Nissequogue Hotel Left: In 1905 the Nissequogue Hotel was built on the southeast corner of Lake Avenue and Railroad Avenue. The hotel had the latest conveniences, gas lighting and indoor plumbing. It burned down in 1962.

Sunshine Lodge, Mr. and Mrs. S. Valvo, Proprietors - Hobson Avenue, St. James, Long Island

School House St. James Two views of the School House, St. James. Built in 1905, the real photo card on the left was mailed in 1908. The restored building on the south side of 25A and still has the belfry. It is used for law offices. All that is around it has changed significantly many times over the years.

R. C. ChurchLeft: St. James Episcopal Church -  built in 1854. The church is still on 25A and in beautiful condition. For another view, click here. Architect Stanford White is buried in the cemetery. Right: "R. C. Church, St. James, L. I." This is St. Philip & St. James Roman Catholic Church on 25A.

Riis Building "Riis Building, St. James." I was told this was now (2002) Vickers Gallery on 25A. As you can see from the photograph at the right, it can't be. It doesn't have three bays, and the chimney is in the wrong place, etc. It's actually on Lake Avenue near the RR tracks.

Left: the illustration from a 1894 Scientific American article about the new 150 foot high windmill in St. James, built by Andrew J. Corcoran for the estate of Prescott Hall Butler. Click the section of the column to read the complete article.

General Store St. James St. James General Store, July 2003"Everett Smith General Store, St. James, L. I." Mailed in 1907. The building remains almost as built by founder Ebenezer Smith in 1857. It is still on Moriches Road, at the intersection of Harbor Hill Road, and is known as the St. James General Store. Right: July of 2003.

Home of Mrs. Stanford White in Nissequogue photographed by Feather. Stanford White was murdered in 1906. The 1917 map at the right (click image for more map) is probably the location had this house on it, but there is another property at the bottom of the map.
