Huntington, NY


Huntington Railroad Station Left: "Railroad Station, Huntington, Long Island, N. Y." - late 1930's or early 1940's.
Right: an earlier view of the station from the street side.

Mill, Huntington, NY "Old Mill, Huntington, N.Y." This real photo postcard was printed before 1907 and not mailed. This is the Van Wyck-Lefferts Tide Mill, Lloyd Harbor. The mill was built on the edge of Huntington Harbor between 1793 and 1797. It is still there and is available for tours.

Birthplace of Walt Whitman Huntington "Birthplace of Walt Whitman" in Huntington. This real photo postcard is the same vintage as the mill. The home, built around 1819, is open for tours. The little front porch is no longer there. This site has more information about tours.


"Nathan Hale Rock -& Huntington Bay" This real photo postcard was printed before 1907. It's now located at Mill Dam Road and New York Avenue. Click the image to see an enlargement of the tablet.

A 1905 card of the Huntington Library (the library from 1892-1958). The building was built as a memorial to the Huntington men who died fighting to preserve the Union during the Civil War. Now known as the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building, it is owned by the Huntington Historical Society and serves as the Town Historian's Office.

Patchogue, NY

Main Street Looking West 1908 Patchogue Lace FactoryLeft: "Main Street, Looking West" mailed in 1908. The store at the right is the original Swezey & Newins. Right: "Patchogue Manufacturing Works" about 1906. The lace mill opened in 1880 and became the largest manufacturer of lace curtains in the country.

Original Swezey NewinsLeft: Fireman's Parade, mailed in 1907. Right: "A Busy Corner" about 1906. Swezey & Newins can be seen in both cards (building with the tower). Founded in 1894, it later became Swezey's Department Store. On September 5, 2003 they announced that all the stores would be closed.

Ship aground The note on the back says, "Ship ashore off Patchogue." Published by Chapman Bros., Photographers, Patchogue, N. Y. Mailed in 1908.

Shoreham, NY

Shoreham Post Office The Post Office (and obviously gas station), Shoreham. The picture is by R. S. Feather of Smithtown Branch.

Shoreham Beach "View at Shoreham, L. I." by A. S. Greene of Port Jefferson. I don't think the woman standing approved of what the photographer was doing. For an enlargement of them and the houses, click here. This was one of a series taken at the same time. Each showing more or less of the beach.

Riverhead, NY

Left: "Bank Building and Post Office, Riverhead, L.I." mailed in 1911. At the top it says, "Bank Building 1892." Right: "Griffing Avenue, from Main Street, showing Historical Building..." The Old Fellows building is on the right with a laundry on the first floor.

Right: "County Buildings and Jail." mailed in 1906. Note the swing in the front yard. Left: "Suffolk County Court House and Jail." The swing is still there, but the building in back has changed along with the fence in about a decade.
