"Birthplace of Walt Whitman" in Huntington. This real photo postcard is the same vintage as the mill. The home, built around 1819, is open for tours. The little front porch is no longer there. This site has more information about tours. |
"Nathan Hale Rock -& Huntington Bay" This real photo postcard was printed before 1907. It's now located at Mill Dam Road and New York Avenue. Click the image to see an enlargement of the tablet. |
A 1905 card of the Huntington Library (the library from 1892-1958). The building was built as a memorial to the Huntington men who died fighting to preserve the Union during the Civil War. Now known as the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building, it is owned by the Huntington Historical Society and serves as the Town Historian's Office. |
The note on the back says, "Ship ashore off Patchogue." Published by Chapman Bros., Photographers, Patchogue, N. Y. Mailed in 1908. |
The Post Office (and obviously gas station), Shoreham. The picture is by R. S. Feather of Smithtown Branch. |
"View at Shoreham, L. I." by A. S. Greene of Port Jefferson. I don't think the woman standing approved of what the photographer was doing. For an enlargement of them and the houses, click here. This was one of a series taken at the same time. Each showing more or less of the beach. |
Left: A portion of "The R. R. Station, Riverhead, L. I." mailed in 1908. At the right is a very busy scene at the station, built in 1910, that still exists. To visit the Town of Riverhead's web site, click here. |
Left: "Main Str., Riverhead, L. I." Mailed from Aquebogue in 1905. Right: "Peconic Ave" mailed from Mattituck in 1910. |
Left: Lake
Agawam, Southampton about 1898. Right: "Dune Road, Southampton, L. I." mailed in 1909. This area has been swept clean of buildings many time since this card was printed. |
