Going east along the north shore of the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, Long Island, is the town of Stony Brook.

Stony Brook, NY - Page 3

The Stony Brook Shopping Center The Community Center Shopping Crescent not long after it was built by Ward Melville in the early 1940s. The grand opening was December 7, 1941. The tall center building is the post office. The eagle flaps its wings on the hour. Only minor changes have taken place - such as additional parking. For an enlargement of the buildings click here.

The Old Homestead "The Old Homestead, Stony Brook, N. Y." Mailed in 1913. This was originally the Hallock homestead and later belonged to Jonas Smith. At the time of the card the building belonged to the Stony Brook Assembly. This is the structure that became the Three Village Tea House shown below, when it was bought by Mrs. Frank Melville, Jr. in 1929.

Three Village Tea House The Three Village Tea House across from the Community Center Shopping Crescent. It was long ago expanded and made into the Three Village Inn. For an enlargement of the building click here.
Right: inside around 1934.

Old Stony Brook Post Office Fire Department "Post Office and Fire Department, Stony Brook, Long Island, N. Y." When the Community Center Shopping Center was built with a post office and fire house the post office was move and became a house. The Fire Department was converted into a museum. It is now the Garden Club Exchange. Part of a gas pump can be seen at the right. For a newer card of this view, click here.

"Base Ball Team, Stony Brook, L. I." Stony Brook School 1912, Christian AvenueRight: "Stony Brook, L. I., School House" mailed in 1912. The school bell can be seen to the left. Built in 1898, the Stony Brook Union Free School was replaced in 1951. It was across from the intersection of Hollow Road. Left: The "Base Ball" team on the back lawn - no date. One corner of the school building is visible. I was told that "Doc. Squire" is sitting on the ground fifth from the left. He became one of two doctors in town, and a Justice of the Peace.

Making Our Roads Left: "Making Our Roads." On the back it says, "Views at Stony Brook, L. I., where we have founded a summer colony and established an assembly." For more on the Stony Brook Association see the next page. Right: Shore Road.

Shore Road, Stony Brook Stony Brook Bungalows 1914"Greetings from the Bungalows, Long Island Assembly, Stony Brook, L. I." On the hill behind the Inn the Stony Brook Association built bungalows in 1907 and 1908. The card at the right was mailed in 1914. Some are still there as cottages for the Inn, and others have been converted to larger residences.
At the left is "The Shore Road, Stony Brook, L. I." This was printed before 1907. The road that goes past the Three Village Inn and the yacht club is Shore Road and becomes Sand Street after it passes the beach. The beach was once the location of Jonas Smith's shipyard.

Stony Brook Yacht Club "Yacht Club, Stony Brook, Long Island, N. Y." The one on the left was postmarked 1935. It is still down the road from the Three Village Inn - with modifications.

Harbor at Stony Brook
"The Harbor" mailed in 1915. In the background to the left of the cliffs is the end of West Meadow beach. The enlargement has superimposed a magnification of this strip of cottages. Right: "The Dock" is the same area.
The Harbor, Stony Brook, Now This photograph, taken August of 2001, is very similar to the one on the left above, including well placed boats. There are now some houses on the hill. The Game Cock Cottage (red roof) and others on West Meadow remain almost as they were before.

Shipman's Beach, Stony Brook
"Shipman's Beach from the Bluff. Stony Brook, Long Island, N.Y." This is the end of West Meadow. Many of the cottages are still there. No date, but there are utility poles.

Shipman's Point with Schooner Shipman's PointThe real photo of Shipman's Point at the left was the reward of patience and timing. Calm waters necessitated full sail. One copy of this is labeled "Sara Maria." Right: The Game Cock Cottage is at the left.
