Continuing east along the north shore of the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, Long Island, is the town of Port Jefferson.

Port Jefferson Square "Port Jefferson Square" probably just before 1920. The new Post Office Building is on the right. The old post office is still on the far side. On the left is fire house with it's bell tower, and the bank with its conical roof. At the head of the street, known as Hotel Square, is Townsend House. It dates back to about 1855. The building has been renovated and modified often over the years, but not torn down.

First National Bank, Port Jefferson
Hotel Square and Bank"First National Bank, Port Jefferson, N. Y." Mailed in 1910, but printed several years before (undivided back). This was the corner of Jones Street and Main Street, but is now the corner of Main Street and East Main Street (former Main Street). The building is still there, but the one to the right is not. Right: Hotel Square and bank.

Main Street, Port Jefferson
"Main Street - Port Jefferson, Long Island, N. Y." The former Jones Street changed dramatically in only a few decades, but the First National Bank of Port Jefferson is still there on the right corner of East Main Street. The tallest building, the post office above (the post office is now on East Main), is still there. Some of the buildings this side of it have been replaced.

Port Jefferson Bank Jones St. Port Jefferson c1950sLeft: Jones Street showing the bank on the right with the fire house (tower) down the street. Right, almost the same view: "Main Street, Port Jefferson, Long Island, N. Y. This town nestles on the waterfront between the rolling countryside of the north shore of Long Island."

"Chas. S. Dickerson. Hardware, Paints, Oils and full line of Housefurnishings, ..."
Main Street Looking East "Main Street, Looking East." Now East Main Street. At the top of the street is the Baptist Church. Published by Beckwith's Pharmacy [105 Jones Street], Port Jefferson. For an enlargement of the cars, one horse drawn carriage, and people, click here.

The building in a earlier view (note the utility poles). On the pole is a sign "Long Island Express." The left window says Dickerson Stationery and the right Vanderburg Jeweler. At the right is the Townsend House.
Left: This is the building on the right side of the card at the top. An insurance agent has rooms above. The larger sign advertises Devoe Paints. The stain glass edged windows on the second and third floor are still there.

Port Jefferson Main Steet, 1910
Main Street dated 1910. Main Street (now East Main Street) curves to the left and Prospect Street goes up the hill. Note the Biddle Fountain, built in 1898, in front of the Baptist Church on the corner. The church is still there. The sign on the pole at the left says "Dreyer & McDermott." On the building next to the church it says (all together) "AHHELME REAL ESTATE."

Baptist Church Biddle FountainLeft "The Baptist Church and Prospect St. [straight ahead], Port Jefferson, L. I." Printed before World War I.

Right "Biddle Fountain" in front of the church, before 1907.

Baptist Church 1930s The Baptist Church in the 1930's. The steeple has been replace and the stairs have been changed to the way they are today. At the left is a sign for Brewster tailoring and men's wear. The building to the left of the church has had some modifications made to it as well.

Port Jefferson Main 1906 (East) Main Street, Port JeffersonMain Street, now East Main, from in front of the Baptist Church looking back towards the bank about 1906. A telegraph office is on the right. Right: the same area later. The left says S. B. Slesinger and on the right is Dare's Drugs and Books.

Lower Business Section, 1909
This circa 1909 picture by A. S. Greene of "The Lower Business Section" is not a postcard. The view of Main Street (now East Main) shown in the book Long Island To-Day by Frederick Ruther, 1909, includes more detail than the postcard I have. The Meat store the woman is walking past is now the Good Times Bookshop.

Port Jefferson Free Library "Free Library, Port Jefferson, Long Island, N. Y." Built in 1924, it is still there on East Main Street, on the corner of Thompson, with additions.

Main Street From East Broadway "Main St. from East Broadway." Printed before World War I. The left (east) side of the street (now East Main) has changed more than the right, but the corner house is still there.

Port Jefferson Harbor East 1911
Water Street, Port Jefferson
Left: 1911 view looking from East Main to East Broadway. The corner building with the porch is "C. F. Robbins." Right: "Water Street, Port Jefferson, L. I." This street led directly to the water before the area near the harbor was filled in to created additional roads. Water Street is now the first block of East Broadway. For an enlargement of the cars, buildings, and horse drawn carriage click here.

Water Street Photo by Greene This A. S. Greene photo of Water Street where it meets Jones Street was mailed in 1912 (made black and white for clarity). The sign on the top of building at the left says "Harbor View Hotel." On the front of the next balcony is "Federal Brewing Co. Ales & Larger Beer." What looks like a reflection of screens is really the silver in the print. The ship is in the Mather & Wood Shipyard.

Wilson's Sail Loft Top, "Established 1836." At top left, "Where R. H. Wilson Made American's Sails in 1851." Right, "Wilson's Sail Loft To-day Best Equipped in America, Port Jefferson, N. Y." The signs on the building indicate they also made flags and awnings and provided storage. On the back of the card "Aug. 14, 1911" is written along with some addition. This was on Water Street.
