Dickinson College LeftDickinson College Right
This four-fold panoramic view postcard is of the John Dickinson Campus, Dickinson College, along High Street. It was probably printed in the early 1930's. The top, or left portion, shows houses that were used by the college, Bosler Hall, and Old West. The bottom, or right portion, shows Tome Scientific (incorrectly colored), East College, and Denny Hall.

Bosler Library 1908 Bosler Hall (the original library). There is also a Bosler Library in Carlisle. This is the same basic building that is currently on the campus, but before the major 1941 renovations. Mailed in 1908. The building was renovated again after the new library opened. Memorial Gate and Old West, Dickinson College Left: "Memorial Gate, Presented to Dickinson College by the Class of 1902." Straight ahead is Old West, the original college building. Designed by Benjamin Latrobe and built in 1804 (although not completed for years). It is now a National Historic Landmark. Right: a 1909 ad from the Conway Hall yearbook (see below).

Conway Hall "Conway Hall" This dormitory on High Street across from the Benjamin Rush Campus was for men. It was originally an prep school (see add from the school's 1909 yearbook at right). It was torn down in 1966. The Waidner-Spahr Library is now on this site.

Conway Hall students and faculty (no key to names) from the 1917 Logbook (yearbook).

Jacob Tome Scientific Building "Jacob Tome Scientific Bldg., Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa." Printed before 1907. Also called a Hall, Tome was named for trustee Jacob Tome when it was built in 1885. It is now known as the Stern Center for Global Education. The "New Tome Science Building" is on West Louther.

East Building 1907 "Carlisle, Pa. Dickinson College, East Building," later known as East College, was built 1836-1838. It was at this time that the first building became known as West College. This was mailed in 1907. The stairs were removed around 1924. In 1969 the east wall collapsed during reconstruction. For a postcard from around 1920, click here.

The second Denny Hall
Denny Hall, Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA
Fire at Denny Hall
"Denny Hall Fire, Union Engine in Service, Carlisle, Pa." The fire took place March 3, 1904, nine years after it was built.

The current building, at the left, was completed in 1905 and features the Allison Clock Tower. The College bell was removed from Old West and placed in the Allison Tower. No date, but probably the 1920's. The building was most recently renovated in 1984. For another pre-World War I card, click here.

South College "South College and Fraternity Buildings at Dickinson College, Pa." No date, but the card (#18574) is the same series as Metzger College. The letters over the entrance of the house are "EX" for Sigma Chi. The building on West High Street was about ninety years old when it was taken down in 1927. The gymnasium below was built on the site.

Dickinson Gymnasium "Dickinson College Gymnasium, Carlisle, Pa." On the back it says, "Dickinson College, founded in 1783, is today one of the important educational institutions of the country." The Alumni Gymnasium was built on High Street in 1928, across from the 1902 Memorial Gate as a replacement for the old gym and included a swimming pool.

North College Street 1909 "N. College Street, Carlisle, Pa." mailed in 1909. When college crosses West High from the Dickinson Law School side it becomes North College. Except for Biddle on the corner, the left is now the Union Building.

Metzger College
"Metzger College, Carlisle, Pa." This was a school for women on North Hanover Street. Not mailed, but obviously taken before the building was made available to Dickinson College in 1913 (card #18582). Note the dirt road and the step at the curb to help visitors get down from a high carriage. Freight trains ran along the back property line.

Lloyd Hall Dickinson Left: "Lloyd Hall, Dickinson College" was purchase to use as a ladies' dormitory sold in 1917.

Metzger Hall
This card of Metzger Hall is from the late 1930's or early 1940's. The porches and fence have been removed. When Drayer Hall was built on campus this, and a house across the street, were used for freshmen women. When Adams Hall dormitory was completed the building was returned to the Metzger Estate. The building was torn down in 1964.

Fraternity at Dickinson Sigma Alpha Epsilon 1939Left: "Fraternity Building at Dickinson College." No date, but the same series (Card #18573) as Metzger College. The smoke stack in back looks like the one that was on the old gymnasium. It's the same house pictured in the 1922 Microcosm for Phi Delta Theta. Right: "Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity" Mailed in 1939.
