Descendants of Jonathan Slocum

Jonathan SLOCUM, born at Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, Sept. 12, 1778 was the son of Jonathan SLOCUM and Ruth TRIPP. He was the baby spoken of in the story about Frances SLOCUM, the Indian Captive.

Jonathan SLOCUM married Martha UNDERWOOD, daughter of Israel UNDERWOOD and Dorothy BENJAMIN, who married at Plainfield, Conn. Martha was born April 4, 1746.

Jonathan and Martha had the following children:

  1. Zebulon Butler, born in 1801. Married Cynthia ___________; he died in 1850 or 1851
  2. Isaac, born in 1803. He moved to California.
  3. Joseph Beach, born the 9th of October, 1805. Married 1st Sarah Helen ALWORTH, daughter of John ALWORTH of Clifford, Pa. She died and he married her sister, Mary, who died a short time there after. He married Minerva RUSSELL.
  4. Benjamin Franklin, married Rhoda BATES.
  5. John F. moved to the state of Wisconsin.
  6. Ebenezer Phineas, born in 1811, married Eleanor BRINK, daughter of Abraham BRINK and Sarah CARWOOD. [Ebenezer is my 3rd Gr. Grandfather.] He died December 07, 1893 in Cochranton, Fairfield Township, Pennsylvania and is buried with his wife Eleanor in the Cochranton Cemetery.
  7. Anna Maria, resided in the state of Illinois
  8. Phebe P., married ______________ OWEN and lived in Odessa, Schuyler County, New York.
  9. William H., lived at Dundaff, Pennsylvania
  10. Laton, drowned when a young boy
  11. Joel.
6. Ebenezer Phineas SLOCUM and Eleanor S. BRINK had the following children:
  1. James W., born in 1831. Enlisted into the 150th Bucktail regiment at Meadville, Pa., pm August 28, 1862. Assigned to Co. H. as a Cpl. Made Sgt. in Feb. of 1864. Was 5’ 3 1/4 ", med. compl., grey eyes, Sandy hair, and occupation listed on enlistment papers show as a Teacher. Also shows he was born in Chemung County, New York. [Have Service Records and Death Certificate. Still trying to find site of burial.] Was killed at the Battle of Petersburg, June 18, 1864.
  2. Theodore L.. was an agent for the sale of Eclectic School Book Series. Resided in Marshall, Clark County, Ill. Married Ettie HART.
  3. George W. born October 26, 1841. Married Carolyn TURNER , December 29, 1864 and had the following children:
    1. Helen M., born June 09, 1868. Married Frank GOURLEY
    2. James P., born March 03, 1871. Married October 07, 1898 to Winifred BURNETT, daughter of John W. BURNETT and Sarah BAYLIN. Winifred was born Dec. 11, 1870.
    3. Lorena V., born February 25, 1874, married John HOFFMAN on April 28, 1898.
    4. John Abbott, [my Gr. Grandfather], born January 16, 1841. He was a Stone Mason by trade. Enlisted in the 150th Bucktail Regiment, Co. H. August 20, 1862. Was seriously wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, on July 1, 1863. Was charged $11.63 to be transported to Gettysburg Hospital. He spent the remainder of his time in the service in hospitals. Was transferred to the 58th Co., Vet. Res. Corps on August 02, 1865. Enlistment papers show he was 5’ 8 1/4", fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair. Have Service records, pension records and death certificate.
    5. Sarah Slocum, born about 1847.
    6. Martha Slocum, born about 1850. Was first married to an M. Miles of Trumbull County, Ohio, and then to George Farringer of Crawford County Pa.
    7. Helen M. Slocum, born 1847, died October 3, 1849.
IV.  John Abbott married Martha Ann REDMAN, daughter of Robert
      REDMAN and Margaret SPENCE on October 10, 1866, at New
      Lebanon, Mercer County, Pa. Marriage performed by Rev. Isaac
      Scofield. [Also have the sword and Bible that John had during the war.]
