"Monument to the Founder
of Smithtown, Smithtown Branch, Long Island, N. Y." The monument says,
"To Commemorate the Founding of Smithtown by Richard Smith, The Bull
Rider,
A.D. 1665." The card has the date 1950 written on the back.
The bronze of the bull Whisper, was made by Charles Rumsey in 1923 for Lawrence Smith Butler, a descendent of Richard Smith. The sculpture was originally in at the entrance of the Brooklyn Museum and not placed on its pedestal at the intersection of Routes 25 and 25A until 1941. "R. R. Station Smithtown." The card on the right was mailed in 1908. |
"Riverside Inn from R. R. Bridge." The river is the Nissequogue and the road is Route 25 just east of the Bull. It was operated by Frank Friedes for many years. The inn burned down years ago.
