Smithtown Bull "Monument to the Founder of Smithtown, Smithtown Branch, Long Island, N. Y." The monument says, "To Commemorate the Founding of Smithtown by Richard Smith, The Bull Rider, A.D. 1665." The card has the date 1950 written on the back.

The bronze of the bull Whisper, was made by Charles Rumsey in 1923 for Lawrence Smith Butler, a descendent of Richard Smith. The sculpture was originally in at the entrance of the Brooklyn Museum and not placed on its pedestal at the intersection of Routes 25 and 25A until 1941.

Smithtown 1905 R R bridge"Smithtown, N. Y." mailed in 1905 from Smithtown. This real photo postcard shows the train trestle in the background. On the right is a closer view of the trestle and a farm of the same vintage. For an enlargement of just the men on the trestle, click here.

Smithtown Store by Trestle 1908 This is a view includes the Booth and Arthur General Store, also known as the River Store, on Jericho Turnpike (25) across from the bull statue. Signs are for merchandise and Sherman Williams paint. It was mailed in 1908. Right: RR station about 1909.

Smithtown RR station Smithtown RR Station 1908"R. R. Station Smithtown." The card on the right was mailed in 1908.

Riverside Inn "Riverside Inn from R. R. Bridge." The river is the Nissequogue and the road is Route 25 just east of the Bull. It was operated by Frank Friedes for many years. I do not know the connection with Frank.

Smithtown Mill PondLeft: about 1906. The mill is no longer there.

Smithtown New Mill Mills From RR BridgeLeft: A photo card by Feather of the "New Mill" (located on New Mill Road). One reference said that is "Ken Wheeler" or "Wheeley" standing in the doorway. The grist mill is on the left, and the saw mill on the right. Right: The mills from R.R. Track.

Vail Farm "The Old Historical Vail Farm" mailed in 1911. Also known as the Webster House, it was built on Jericho Turnpike (Route 25).
Right: a card published by the Prick Pharmacy in Smithtown Branch showing the bridge crossing the Nissequogue.

Head River School Left: "Head of River School, Smithtown." The building was built on New Mill Road in 1815.
Right: Rassapeague Club about 1909.

M. E. Church about 1907 The Methodist Episcopal Church with the parish house to the left on the south side of Main Street, between Elm and Maple Avenues, Smithtown Branch (abbreviated Br.). The card was mailed in 1907. The steeple was removed in 1935 because it was leaning. The six-sided bell tower altered the appearance to that seen below. The parsonage and church were demolished in June of 1962.
