Stony Brook Grist Mill c 1913 "The Mill, Stony Brook, N. Y." The addition at the back and the cover to the wheel were not original and were removed after Ward Melville purchased it in 1947. It operated a mail order business until about that time. Mailed in 1913.

This photo, taken in March of 2002, shows the mill without the addition at the back, but otherwise very much the same from outside. Saddle Rock MillRight: The modern chrome card of the same mill says on the back, "Saddle Rock Grist Mill. One of the oldest tidal grist mills in America, the mill was built before 1700. It has been restored to its working condition as of the mid 1800's, by the Nassau County Historical Museum. Located on Grist Mill Lane in Saddle Rock, in the Great Neck, N. Y. area, the mill is open to the public."

Old Mill, Port Washington Left: "All that's left of the old Mill, Port Washington, L. I." The card was mailed, but the postmark is not legible. From all other indications this would have been printed after 1907 and before World War I. Another postcard of this same picture was labeled, "Old Tide Mill..."

Plandome Mills 1908 Plandome Mills"Plandome Mills, built 1693, Manhasset, L. I." mailed 1908. The note reads, "Are you going to the Mineola Fair next week? I am going." Right: a newer card. The mill building is still there.

Manhasset Grist Mill "Old Grist Mill, Manhasset, L. I. Pickering Photo." Printed prior to 1907 (undivided back). This is John Mitchell's Gristmill, which was built, according to Manhasset the First 300 Years, about 1700 at Whitney's Pond. It was carried away by a flood in 1826.

Mill, Huntington, NY Left: "Old Mill, Huntington, N.Y." before 1907. This is the Van Wyck-Lefferts Tide Mill, Lloyd Harbor. The mill was built on the edge of Huntington Harbor between 1793 and 1797. It is still there and is open for tours. Right: Grist Mill in Yaphank, Suffolk County, NY

New London, Connecticut

"New London, Conn. 'Ye Olde Towne Mill,' Erected 1650." Four different views of the mill, but all from before World War I. 

The one at the right is a real photo that was pasted to a postcard. The mill is still in New London, and is available for tours.
