Manhasset, NY - Page 2

Sources of history include Manhasset the First 300 Years; a Tri-Centennial Project of the Manhasset Community Liaison Committee, 1980

St. Mary's Church Manhasset 1931 "St. Mary's Church, School and Rectory, Manhasset, L. I." mailed in 1931. These buildings are on Northern Boulevard, Route 25, across from the entrance to Plandome Road. I can not think of a day or time when it would be possible to take a picture now without one car in sight.

Manhasset School House in 1907 "The School House, Manhasset" about 1906. This is the second school house. It was on the corner of Plandome Road and Memorial Place. The sign on the front says, "Manhasset Public School District No. 6, Erected 1868." By the time this picture was taken that original structure had been expanded twice. It was used from 1869 to 1914.

Plandome Road School "Public School No 4, Manhasset, L. I." This school was on Plandome Road south of the train station. The original section was built in 1915. Over the years the Plandome Road School served many purposes. It was taken down about 1965.

Left: Manhasset High School about 1946.
Right: the school about 1956. Except for all that ivy, it looks much the same.

Munsey Park Elementary School, Manhasset, NY "Munsey Park Elementary School." For an enlargement of just the building click here. Right: a card mailed in 1948 showing the addition to the right. An addition in the same style was recently added to this side (Northern Boulevard, Route 25, is to the right).

Park Avenue at the entrance to Munsey Park about 1932. The cross street sign says "Locust Place." The name was changed to Munsey Place in 1933. On the right behind the right pillar is a large sign with a picture of a house. Munsey Park was still being developed at this time, and that is apparently a sign advertising the latest model. See the history page of Village of the Munsey Park.

Plandome MillsLeft: "Plandome Tide Mills, Port Washington." Built in 1693 between Manhasset and Port Washington. Printed about 1910. The sign says Mackey & Sons. Right: a newer card without the extension on the left, but with a rooster weather vain. The building is still there.

Manhasset Grist Mill Left: "Old Grist Mill, Manhasset, L. I. Pickering Photo." Printed prior to 1907. According to Manhasset the First 300 Years, this is the Mitchell Gristmill, which was built about 1700 at Whitney's Pond.
Right: Road from Manhasset to Port Washington. The sign is an advertisement with Plandome at the top. Printed about 1910.
